January 2012 “Switzerland Tour” Narnia here we come!

January 30, 2012

Hello, my name is Grant and for the next two weeks I’ll be updating the blog for the guys!
So, with that out of the way, let’s begin.

As always, we met at Shaggys place with all of our bags and prepared for the journey to the airport. “Holy Cow Batman” Shaggy is awake!? There’s a first time for anything I suppose.
Soon after we had made it to the airport and took care of the boring stuff, we got to rest, sharing a coffee at the same place we had stopped at two years ago!

After a long rest we finished up and noticed the plane was boarding! How did we miss that!? Arriving at our gate and heading straight out to the plane, we began to see Narnia in our sights!
One hour and 40 minutes later we had arrived in Geneva, feeling very, very glad to be back on the ground, only to remember that we now had a 3 hour train ride, oh joy. However, this train was special, it had an “upstairs”; the excitement of the train swaying ever so slightly to the left and right only lasted for the first 5 minuets of the journey. The rest of the trip consisted of Shaggy composing a song and drawing a pretty picture, like total rock stars, right? FINALLY! We made to to Luzern and met up with our old friend Margo Cummings, the wonderful lady that has helped set up our gig at the Ecole d’Humanité. She was right there, to pick us up from the train station in the infamous “sad-car” to take us to Bill Weir, the one and only. He’s kind enough to let us use his amazing place and let us pillage his food and coffee supply!
Tomorrow, we’ll be playing a gig at Bill’s bar, “Legends”; tune in again to see how it turns out.

Bead, AWAAAAY!!

Award Winning Act…. We’ll ‘av that!

November 5, 2011

So………. back in July 2010 whilst sitting in a hotel room in Thurstonland,Yorkshire in the Rose & Crown whilst on a 12 gig tour down there, waiting to goto the next gig we entered a few competitions online and one of them was the EMA Exposure Music Awards.

We entered this as it wasnt a fan based competition or a push to get email addresses like so many of the music competitions these days. There was some great judges involved and they worked on what your online profile was like and your gigs and how much of an online presence you had and actually spent time listening to your music and checking everything themsleves. We sent them the video “No Secret” too from our youtube page and links to most of our pages, then left it to be never thought of again …. until…. we recieved an email back in March advising us we were in the top 5 “folk Acts” in the UK. WOOOOOWZAAA!!!

The next part of the story was we were asked to turn up at the Award Ceremony in London and was given the dates but unfortunately this landed on the Swiss leg of our tour! Unfortunately there was no way we could make it to london and we had to let them know.

Sitting on a balcony in Luzern,Switzerland and decided to check my emails at around 10am and there it was…  an email from EMA Awards..

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!  We won the catergory and are to collect our lovely award for “Best Folk Act 2011” and we also got some good news about us having the chance to play Cheltnham Folk Festival and we would be presented with our award there.

What an amazing memory to be sitting in Luzern, Switzerland whilst on tour and recieving this amazing award and being able to share this with all our fans and friends in Switzerland whilst on tour. As you can imagine we were absolutely buzzing and now .. we are an “Award winning” Act from Northumberland. Get in!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

You can find out more from thier website below if your interested! More great news to share with you all and thanks to everyone as always for your continued support with our musical lives…

EXPOSURE MUSIC AWARDS HOMEPAGE

Cheers to a fruity Brew! “NORTHUMBERLAND GAZETTE”

October 8, 2011

We recently got a feature in the Northumberland Gazette and Morpeth Herald about out Yorkshire Tour and our sponsor “Brass Monkey Breweries” You can read the post below.

Published on Tuesday 4 October 2011 05:38

THEY completed a gruelling musical marathon, performing 100 gigs in 100 days.

They have raised thousands of pounds for charity.

Their first radio podcast show attracted more than 3,000 music fans worldwide.

And now, benevolent buskers Derek Allan and Shaggy, aka Jason Vare, are raising a glass to another adventure.

Because the music duo, who go by the name of We Steal Flyers, are about to make their own beer.

And the pair want to give their alcoholic beverage, which will be named after the band, a fruity twist – by making it mango flavoured.

Derek, from Broomhill, explained: “When we tour, Shaggy and me have a vindaloo and a mango chutney.

“You can’t have a vindaloo beer so we thought we would go for mango.

“We want to make it about four per cent, so people will be likely to drink more of it without falling down.”

The twosome intend to start making the drink in April next year, teaming up with The Brass Monkey Brewery, which is based in Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire.

But how did the lads get the chance to try their hand at brewing?

Derek said: “The Brass Monkey Brewery sponsor our Yorkshire tours and Richard from the brewery asked us if we wanted to take a look and see what they do.

“We watched them make the beer and we were like, ‘we could do that’ and we were asked if we would like to make some.

“We like to try everything and making beer will be brilliant. It is really exciting.”

Derek and Shaggy, from Bedlington, will make the drink during their Yorkshire Brass Monkey Brewery Tour 2012 in April.

And the lads are hoping the punters will lap it up.

“For us, the aim is just for people to like it,” said Derek.

Their ale adventure is just the latest addition to the We Steal Flyers journey, which includes playing a century of gigs in as many days, in aid of children’s hospices.

And in November, the guys are set to support Roy Wood, of Wizzard fame, during his I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday Midlands Extravaganza.

Looking ahead to the gig at Wolverhampton’s The Robin 2, in November, Derek said: “Roy Wood is like Mr Christmas. He is one of the most respected musicians in the world and it is a big deal to be playing to his home crowd.”

Yorkshire Tour & Brass Monkey Brewery

August 3, 2011

Well we are finally back from our mini Yorkshire tour and once again… It was amazing and one of the best so far! Massive thanks to Rich and Brass Monkey Brewery for making the Tour possible and making us more than welcome as always!

The tour kicked off 11 days ago and we landed at our first gig with a few hiccups to say the least but .. enough said about that the better we think.. lol..

From then though we kicked off the Thurstyfest 3 Festival on the saturday morning and the Rose & Crown sure know how to throw a festival!

Every gig from that point on was amazing and we had so much support though out yorkshire from the local press, to familiar faces and people travelling 100’s of miles to come to a show and of course rich and freinds and the Brass Monkey Brewery for sponsoring the whole tour.

We even managed to squeeze a day off in the middle and nip about and check out the scenery. We popped down to Holmfirth where they have the famous cafe from the TV series “Last of the summer wine” and travelled up to the beautiful Castle Hill for some great scenery and the fotos will be on the We Steal Flyers FACEBOOK page soon.

Well all that is left to do now is to nip down to the brewery for a weekend and create our “We Steal FLyers” beer for sale in bars down in the yorkshire area , which we cant wait for!

We’re returning to the Rose & Crown for the New Year Eve;s party to play some songs and party the next year in… and we cant wait!

What an amazing tour and thanks to every single one of you who made it special…
