January 2012 “Switzerland tour” To Boldly Go…

February 7, 2012

I’m back once again, here to give you guys an update on the 2012 Narnia tour. (I’m a tad behind as we’ve been in the mountians for the past two days.)

moving on..

We were picked up at Bills place, and in a frenzy we rushed around packing as little as possible for the trip to Zermatt. The trip was sure going to be intresting, driving our car onto a train and then said train going through a tunnle. Wow. After 20 minuets on the train we arrived in Zermatt to be taken to the The Omnia – Cavern by electric car. When I was told that we were going to be ‘inside’ a mountain I was unsure what to expect, sure enough we were truely, INSIDE the mountain, in a glass box to be exact. The glacial waters flowing beneath us was an amazing sight indeed. After we had a look around the amazing venue we were taken into our room, the ‘Directors suite’ talk about feeling like kings, this room was amazing. Just amazing.

I took the time before the gig to grab some footage of the guys wearing ski goggles and complimentary shower caps as they danced aroudnd the room. great days.

The time of the gig drew closer so we all headed down for the sound check, during the check the manager of the hotel asked the guys to play his favorite song “No Secret”.Not long after the sound check and mini preformance, the room began to fill up pretty quickly, it was clear that his was going to turn out a very good gig.

Towards the end the guys were begged for an encore, then another, and another. I’d call that a pretty big success

With the night over and all of us exhausted we made it back to the room and got some rest, looking forward to what we had been told was “the best breakfast ever” (And indeed it was.) With us all fed up we prepared for the next adventure, up a second mountain!

And now, a drawing by our own Bill Weir. Enjoy!

January 2012 “Switzerland Tour” Hotel Switser-what!?

February 4, 2012

Once again, it’s me, Student Grant, here to keep you up to date on our adventures in Narnia.

Just like on the October Switzerland tour, we once again got the chance to play at the famous “Swietsehofen”, can I spell or pronounce it a year later? No. We all took the bus to the “Swietsehofen” and helped load the bands equipment into the luggage room. I however spent most of this time looking for the concierge that Shaggy didn’t tip last time we stayed, hoping for an awkward encounter. Not long after the guys unloaded all of the equipment we were back on the road, heading back to Bills pad for a quick rest before the gig.

As night fell it was time to head down to the “switzehoofen” for the gig. An hour later the guys were ready to play, the crowd, as always was loving the music, what did you expect right?
As the night went on the crowd were getting more and more into it, even singing along! The crowd was also enjoying Mark Chesterfields “Whiskey Experience” getting to taste all of the erotic whiskeys of Scotland.

The gig came to an end the the crowd demanded one final song, as you would expect the guys delivered, playing their “land down under” cover. As the guys finally packed up I was still holding my breath, hoping to See the porter from last year, but alas I was not so fortunate.

The final leg of the night was making it back to Bills, lucky for us, Mark was kind enough to drive us there, helping us avoid the long walk.
We had finally made it back to bills for 1:30AM, plenty time for a coffee and for Derek to talk to Melanie over Skype for the first time ever!

And with that I’m done for the night. I’ll leave you with a drawing by Shaggy, titled “unda ‘da sea”

January 2012 “Switzerland Tour” Mountains Or Hills?

February 3, 2012

Student Grant here again, brining some more adventures from Narnia. Let’s begin.

Waking up at 7:30Am I had left the guys at Bills’ place, heading down to Hasliberg for the 3rd gig, planning to meet them there later. This place was great, by far the most amazing place we’ve seen in Switzerland so far, surrounded my huge mountains, snow and magic. At this point, we were truly in Narnia.

The snow around us was deeper then me! Yet the people, were going about their lives like it was nothing! After the guys arrived and we had some time to kill, so they began jamming on the couch, trying out some new songs, and messing around. I took this chance to pull out the camera and record them, the result was a pretty amazing video.

After an hour of recording we were given the chance to try the second national dish of Switzerland, “Raclette” melted cheese on just about anything. A huge thanks to Margo for cooking us a great meal and letting us take over her couch for the video!

An hour or two later we headed off to the sound check, when we arrived we noticed that the sound was setup by two super talented 16 and 17 year olds. Someone had also put a huge poster with the lyrics to Wagon-wheel up next to the stage so at the end the whole school could join in! An hour of setting up later, the gig began, sending the students into a frenzy, loving every song that was played and finally ending the night with the whole school singing “Wagon-wheel” together, a teacher even joining the guys on stage with a mandolin, What an amazing night!

As I’ve spoilt you with a video, You’ll get a drawing tomorrow!

January 2012 “Switzerland Tour” It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

February 1, 2012

Hey! I’m back again, with more adventures from Narnia for you all to enjoy!

So after waking up and enjoying a few coffees we began getting ready for the first of the gigs.
The gig was played at Bill’s bar, the “Legends”. An hour and a coffee later Deg had re-stringed and tuned the guitar, ready for the gig, all hard work that I managed to set back when I tripped over the guitar and destroyed the tuner. Some time later me and Derek left to meet Shaggy at the Legends, lucky for us, it was snowing outside, making everything look beautiful, more like Narnia than ever. With our journey underway and oversized umbrella in hand, we noticed Margo drive by in the Sad-car, I’ve never been so relived in my life! “Finally we can get out of the cold.” I was shot down as she got out of the car and announced she was walking with us.
We made it to bills, with Derek sporting a snow filled beard and me, frozen to the core.
Soon after we warmed up and had a coffee the guys got the show on the road, playing two forty minuet sets for the people of Narnia.

We took a taxi back to bills pad and once again, pillaged his coffee supply before heading to bed.

I’ll leave you with a drawing by Derek, enjoy.

Award Winning Act…. We’ll ‘av that!

November 5, 2011

So………. back in July 2010 whilst sitting in a hotel room in Thurstonland,Yorkshire in the Rose & Crown whilst on a 12 gig tour down there, waiting to goto the next gig we entered a few competitions online and one of them was the EMA Exposure Music Awards.

We entered this as it wasnt a fan based competition or a push to get email addresses like so many of the music competitions these days. There was some great judges involved and they worked on what your online profile was like and your gigs and how much of an online presence you had and actually spent time listening to your music and checking everything themsleves. We sent them the video “No Secret” too from our youtube page and links to most of our pages, then left it to be never thought of again …. until…. we recieved an email back in March advising us we were in the top 5 “folk Acts” in the UK. WOOOOOWZAAA!!!

The next part of the story was we were asked to turn up at the Award Ceremony in London and was given the dates but unfortunately this landed on the Swiss leg of our tour! Unfortunately there was no way we could make it to london and we had to let them know.

Sitting on a balcony in Luzern,Switzerland and decided to check my emails at around 10am and there it was…  an email from EMA Awards..

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!  We won the catergory and are to collect our lovely award for “Best Folk Act 2011” and we also got some good news about us having the chance to play Cheltnham Folk Festival and we would be presented with our award there.

What an amazing memory to be sitting in Luzern, Switzerland whilst on tour and recieving this amazing award and being able to share this with all our fans and friends in Switzerland whilst on tour. As you can imagine we were absolutely buzzing and now .. we are an “Award winning” Act from Northumberland. Get in!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

You can find out more from thier website below if your interested! More great news to share with you all and thanks to everyone as always for your continued support with our musical lives…

October 2011 “Switzerland Tour” – Part Deux

October 27, 2011

“Student Grant” here again to continue the adventure!, I’m a little behind so let’s begin!

Day 4 – The Hills are alive with the Sound of Music

after waking up at the  “Scweifhsjdjcnoffen” the  guys met up with me in the lobby, to sort out our bags and get ready for the next stage of our adventure, heading into the mountians to play at the Espresso Bar While we waited for Mark and Patrick to pick us up and take us to the gig we helped ourself to a few free apples from the hotel lobby, at least…I hope they were free. Within a few moments Mark had arrived, ready to take us to Grindlewald. while on our way there was some amazing scenery mountians as far as the eye could see…well as far as me and Derek could see, after a few miles on the road, Shaggy was fast asleep, I’m one to talk though, I too was fast asleep after half of the trip. By the time we where at Grindlewald we where starving and sleepy,so after lugging our bags to our room’s there could not have been a better time for coffee. After finishing a very nice cup of coffee with Mark and Patrick outdoors in the beautiful sun shine whilst staring up at these snow covered mountains all around us, we went back to our rooms for a quick rest before the sound check.

Within no time it was time to set the gear up, when we arrived at the bar we met Jens Bremm and he was a great guy and a real character! not long after the sound check we where taken for our musicians meal and of course shaggy had his beer in hand,, a big ol’ bowl of chicken noodle soup, a big piece of pork and a godly desert to finish off with! about an hour passed and it was time for the gig, damn, that place was crowded! The place was alive and the boys did so well they were asked to play another short after there 3 x 40mins at Spinners. The Swiss lads really turned the night into something amazing.. banging the chairs and drumming on anything they could find ..including there mates heads?? whilst Patrick the Rockstar and Mark played it cool at the back of the room whilst plying themselves with way too much alcohol. This was a definate one for the guys to remember and we even met the Swiss Jack Black on the way out who we later found out had cooked our meal in the hotel earlier.

Day 5 – Legends Have it!!!

UP AND AT EM!! Well another fine day in Switzerland and we would have loved a lie in but the guys were coming to grab us ready for a drive down the mountains back to Luzern ready for our gig in the fantastic Legends Bar. So we grabbed our bits n pieces and wandered down to the pick up point where mark and patrick met us and started to head back.

We decided to make a pitstop at a garage on the way down to get some fuel and maybe some coffee to shake off shaggys beer head! So.. we grabbed a few things made our coffee from the machine at which point shaggy decided to walk across to the counter to pay by holding the coffee by the lid….. oops!!  The coffee dropped and exploded all over some poor gals legs and the floor. Shaggy looked a little glazed and he said he didnt know how to say sorry and carried on making another one..   but when he got to the counter he didnt look too happy about having to pay for 2 coffees and a bagel while we creased about the floor laughing at him.

We hit the road once again and finally reached Luzern where we got dumped with out cases outside legends bar and met back up with  Billster the Tank Man for a coffee outside. After coffee’s were done and a bit postcard hunting we headed up to the appartment to get rid of our bags and get cleaned up for tonights Unplugged gig.

We landed at the bar around 7.30pm to a warm welcome as always in Legends. A bit chat and a few more coffees and beers and the lads were off on the start of their set which turned into a jam session..  we had ahmed on the cahjon join them first who was a brilliant drummer and give the songs that special extra something then we had Gemma who decided to play us a few songs with shaggy joining in on the noodly bits! Then gemma decided to take to the box and join the lads with her drumming… first time on it too and she sounded great! Rockstar Patrick tipped up with his guitar and played some great songs and then the lads finished off with some sing alongs and had the whole bar singing along with them…  They have a natural talent in getting people to join in and be part of the show which is amazing to watch from the other side of the fence. At the end of the night of the girls who had been at the bar listening to the mucic showed shaggy and derek some drawings she had been doing whilst they were playing in the bar.Amber was a fantastic artist and after a little chat with the guys it looks like she will be doing the artwork for the album too.All in all another amazing night in our home from home..  Legends. We headed up home with kebabs in hand and another day was done!

A Welcome Break – 4 Days off

Well it was time for their well deserved break of the tour. We Steal Flyers had rocked every bar and they deserved some time to relax. We lounged around the appartment a lot of the time and played songs on the balcony in the sun. Bill took us out on a trip up in the mountains in the car which was a wicked drive but I think health and safety hadnt been up on this route at all. After parking up the car and paying for a ticket we then found out that the bar was closed at the top so down we go again!

Another day off and we were invited to Margo’s Rockstar Mansion for a look around. She was a friend of Bills and said we could go for a look around as she was house sitting and this place had to be seen to be believed. The house was amazing and it was amazing to see how other people lived. After she made us some spicy cheese and fed and watered us she took us down to the lower level. An indoor Swimming pool that would put ashington baths to shame, a huge gym, a spaceship for a hot tub and turkish bath all looking out onto the mountains that surrounded luzern. What a place this was and I think a game of Hide and Seek would take a while in there for sure. We also met the lovely Shaula who was Margo’s dog and she was a great little gal who I managed to become great friends with. God’s Tears hahahaha. Its great meeting all these people and making friends along the way and has made this trip extra special for all of us. Speaking of freinds.. in enters John Castle again as part of the We Steal Flyers Legacy.

Horses for courses , Nickers for Snickers

As you can imagine we spent a lot of time in Legends on our days off and the lads still did a lot of playing on the night time..  one day was particularly special though… THE THONG DAY!!

John Castle is a great freind of the lads. He’s a hometown Dallas lad who lives in Switzerland now and is always hanging around at Legends and tipped up to a lot of the gigs for the boys..  but one memory which im sure has been burned into the brains of all that witnessed it was shaggy and John’s Thong moment. We were hanging with John at Legends one afternoon and Me and derek were heading for the Co-op to grab some food while a very protective shaggy waited at the bar incase someone stole his pint. John was going to the co-op with me n Derek and asked shaggy if he wanted anything. Shaggy requested a “sNickers” the nutty chocolate bar of champions..hahaha

We headed to the store and grabbed some things at which point John castle had an idea and grabbed something a little special while we were there for shaggy..  We headed back to the bar where shaggy was waiting for his chocolate and John pulled out his present for shaggy. A black pair of sexy knickers at which point shaggy said.. “I said Snickers ….. not nickers??”

Now at this point we are all creased up with laughing but shaggy had a plan… dropped his trousers and flung off his undercrackers..  and slipped on his new Nickers! Oh my god you should have seen the look on the Castle’s and Bill’s face, priceless. We were laughing so hard while shaggy pranced around in a lovely black thong and obviously the phone cameras came out and off the photos went to Facebook. The thong is now legendary and is hanging up on the wall in Legends bar so if you ever make it to Luzern and would like to check out the local history, head to Legends and look up to the right of the big screen..  Shaggys little piece of decoration finishes off Legends just right I think.

PART 3 will be coming soon and enjoy the reading!   Student Grant A Bead.. if you have any memories of the guys or anything to add please leave a comment below to let us know your reading this stuff!! Thong thong thong thonnnnnnng thonggggggggggggggggggg!!

October 2011 “Switzerland Tour” – What they do – Part 1

October 19, 2011

Hello, It’s me, “Student Grant” and I’ll be updating the blog along the way of the tour ,shooting all the photos and videos and hopefully giving you a full insight into what the guys are like on tour. Enough of me.. lets get straight to it… enjoy the adventure!

Day 1 of the Tourwhere it all began

So,  me and Derek arrived at Shaggy’s place at 11:00PM on the 11th of October, all set to begin our adventure and we decided a game on the ps3 was a good plan to pass a couple of hours until we left at 3:00am.after about an hour and a half, Shaggy was fast asleep on the couch with pizza all over his face, when the time came to wake him,at about 3:00AM me and Derek had to decide who woke him up…with a game of rock paper scissors, lucky for me, I won. After waking a very sleepy Shaggy up we got the car loaded up and began our jouney to Manchester Airport, three hours later we had arrived at Manchester where we had  to leave the car. Finaly, we were past the long painful part of the trip now all that was left to do was get a bus from the car park to the airport itself, this journey was made extra special by our amazingly “happy” bus driver. Less then a minute or two had passed and we had made it to the airport entrance, after making it through security without getting attacked things were looking pretty good!  some time and a coffee later it was time to board the plane, Finaly! Switzerland was in sight! lucky for us we were only on the plane for an hour and a half due to it being 20 miniuts early! Not long after we got back through airport security once again at Zurich, we collected our bags and met up with our old friend Bill Weir, the owner of  “The Legends Bar”  He was kind enough to drive us back to the appartment he was letting us use for a few days, What a guy!  Now we were  unpacked and ‘sorted’ Bill took us for a coffee and we caught up.

Day 2 –  Kinda like the Blues Brothers …. but Different!

The first of gigs the guys were to play was at a bar called the “Bruch Brothers”where we were looked after by the owner Philip Husler, with 2 litre bottles of water and a huge bottle of diet coke on stage ready for the guys during the show and plenty coffee to keep us alive after the 4:00pm soundcheck . The gig went amazingly, and as you would expect the guys blew the roof off of the place, while still keeping the sound below 95 decibels, that’s right. there was a giant decibel meter staring the guys in the face through the gig and if it hit the 95 mark.. out goes all the electric, but the crowd was great, so great infact the guys where asked to continue playing long after the gig ended and of course they did. It was great to hear the crowd actually asking for original songs like “No Secret” and “Our World” which they had been viewing on the youtube page before we arrived.

So with that the night had came to an end and we made our way home to Bill’s place… with a very drunken shaggy who enjoyed some dancing with the locals (if you can call it dancing) and kebabs and guitars in hand. Time to hit the sack and a job well done.

Day 3 – How do I say that hotel’s name?

So our third day in Switzerland had arrived and we popped up around 10am to the sound of hells bells by AC/DC, oh wait.. it was just the huge church outside our window that had been gonging all night long. Thanks for that you crazy bell shakers. We headed down to our favourite kebab shop just outside the appartment (or kebap as they say here) to find new owners and a whole new layout in there since the last tour. But we thought we’d give them the benefit of the doubt and ordered after many “ehh…engleesh?” “anglais yes” “we are ENGLISH” then pointed at the menu and made a mhmmmm noise for each thing we wanted. Im sure at some point they mumbled pirate under their breath to while serving derek his Kebab wrap. I had a little donner box (pleased it was spelt donner and not Donna) which was just a meaty box of goodness.(kinda the same as the Donna Box) and we filled our boots then headed down to Billys Bar. The amazing ,fantastic, brtitish pub looking Legends in Luzern and winner of the Best of British Pubs in Switzerland in the Telegraph in 2010.We Drank some more coffee then off to check in at the Hotel where the gig was being held.

Holy Cow BATMAN!! Their gig tonight was at the Hotel Scweifhsjdjcnoffen (I’ll maybe correct that with the right name later as we cant even say it so i think a copy and paste might be the best idea) This place was amazing and one of the biggest hotels ive seen and it also faces the Lake Luzern right in the middle of town. Manuel took our bags from us at reception and we jumped in the lift. Well Derek didnt as he doesnt do lifts but Manwell insisted on pulling him in. Derek was having none of it and set of on the stairs four flights up on the biggest staircase youve ever seen.

The porter let shaggy in his room ,showed him how the door worked and then placed shaggys bags on a baggage holder thing? At which point manwell stuck his hand out to shaggy for a tip we think. Shaggy did the right thing and shuck his hand instead and sent him out the door to dereks room, oops. With the eventful day over it was tine for the gig, the guys were set up to play in a huge hall with a bar in the centre but even with all of this room it was still amazingly crowded. Before the gig the guys and myself were treated to a meal at the hotel, the food was fit for a king, and I’m sure we turned a few heads as we sat at the best table got an awesome meal and walked off without paying…When the guys started to play the crowd were won over almost instantly, while the gig ran on Mark Chesterfield the tour agent was hosting a whisky tasting table that proved to be very popular with the crowd. as the gig came to an end  I Packed away the camera and went outside to see how Shaggy was doing…He was laying over a table in pain, it turns out he had opened the door and stubbed his foot on the first step causing our ‘king of balance’ Shaggy to fall down and flip the table, what a legend… after a bit mingling with the good people after the show we decided to head out for a drink with Bill,Andrea and someone who i cant remember his name.. (lets call him Schmeagal for now) We headed into the Irish bar where we had a coffee at 2am apart from shaggy who was enjoying the Free Beer and had to carry on with it. He disapeared to the toilet upstairs and didnt come back for over an hour… he went out for a smoke on the roftop where he met Harry Potthead who said he was a musician too.. turned out he was a Rapper and shaggys new freind. So from then on shaggy was called MC Hammer for the rest of the night. Its so strange seeing everyone in the bars just smoking pott on the balconys and making joints. We headed off to a sports bar for one more drinky then once again as the night came to an end, we headed home for the night, lucky for the guys they where able to stay in the five start hotel that I’m still unable to spell or pronounce, let’s go with “Scweifhsjdjcnoffen”…while I had to head back to Bills pad. After a good night of sleep we where ready for the next chapter of our adventure, heading into the  mountians to Grindlewald @ Spinners Bar. Here we gooooooo!!!

Student Grant is signing out and will be with you with the next part of the adventure very soon!! I love this life!!
